Home to the County Center and its correlating courts, everybody knows the Whipple Ave exit off highway 101 and the Farm Hill Drive exit off of highway 280. Redwood City has strong, involved neighborhoods that frequently participate in making the community a better place. From the Farm Hill area to Friendly Acres or Woodside Plaza, this city reflects diversity, strength and character. Some areas have their own organized neighborhood associations and affiliations which periodically meet to discuss issues affecting their streets and homes. Redwood City is fast becoming the major entertainment destination with music, festivals, movies, dance, crafts, family activities and more. Redwood City Downtown has been undergoing many changes to and modernizations. Home to seasonal festivals and the San Mateo County History Museum Redwood City plays a major role in the Bay Area. REDWOOD SHORES Only a 1,500 acre piece of land surrounded by Highway 101 on the west, San Francisco Bay on the east, Belmont to the north and Foster City to the South, Redwood Shores is a newer area developed by Redwood City when rejected by Belmont and San Carlos. Now home to the acclaimed $10 million, 60-acre aquatic amusement park Marine World, Redwood Shores with its newer and more spacious homes has become a highly attractive area for Peninsula residents. In 1989 in addition to the 2,400 units housing approximately 7000 residents, a corporate complex called the Shores Center opened and attracted companies like DHL, Oral-B Labs, Fluor Mining and Metals, Hotel Sofitel and many other high-tech companies. By 1993, population was reaching over 9,000 due to the award-winning housing, parks, hiking and bicycle trails, fitness circuits and the modern Pacific Athletic Club. Sandpiper Elementary School opened in September of 1997 along with a Marketplace Shopping Center, a Sandpiper Community Center and a Fire Station.
